The composer of this piece, Tom Tykwer, is a German film director, producer, screenwriter, and composer. He collaborated with The Wachowskis as co-director for the science fiction film Cloud Atlas (2012). Adapted from the 2004 novel of the same name by David Mitchell, the movie has multiple plots occurring during six different eras in time; Mitchell described it as "a sort of pointillist mosaic." Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Bae Doo Na and Zhou Xun star as part of the cast. The story is unique in that it jumps between eras until each storyline eventually resolves, spanning centuries, and stories of different eras intervene with each other and cross-references took place throughout the movie.
